Citizenship Education
The National Education and Social Studies (NESS) Committee aims to develop our pupils to become active and committed citizens. Comprising teachers from each Instructional Programme (IP) department, NESS is committed to offer an integrated curriculum to suit the needs of the pupils.
The National Education (NE) curriculum
The NE curriculum is designed to engage our pupils to develop citizenship dispositions:

In engaging the “Head”, pupils are given the opportunity to be actively involved in their own learning, in exploring current affairs and social issues as well as commemorating the 4 NE events namely, Total Defence Day, Racial Harmony Day, International Friendship Day and National Day, pupils develop a deep sense of belonging to Singapore and learn what it means to be a Singaporean.
In engaging the “Heart”, pupils connect emotionally with the Singapore story. By being exposed to an array of enrichment programmes such as Learning Journeys to the Kampong Glam, NE Show and Chingay, our pupils have an increased awareness of Singapore’s unique history, culture and resource centres to imbue a deeper sense of belonging to this place we call home.
In engaging the “Hands”, pupils are actively involved in reaching out to the communities in need.
“SNGS Gives Back” is a school-wide initiative to encourage our pupils to contribute to meaningful causes. In addition, partnership with external organisations such as Food Bank, IJHCC and Caritas Singapore Community Council are platforms where pupils volunteer to give back to society.
The Social Studies curriculum
In line with the Ministry of Education (MOE) guidelines, the Primary Social Studies (SS) syllabus seeks to develop the civic competence of our pupils. At the heart of SS is the preparation of our pupils to be effective citizens by helping them to better understand the interconnectedness of Singapore and the world they live in and appreciate the complexities of the human experience.
SS aims to develop in pupils an understanding of the interconnected world they live in and evoke pupils’ curiosity to inquire into real-world issues that concern their lives. Through inquiry and authentic learning experiences e.g. Learning Journeys to Asian Civilisation Museum, Indian Heritage Centre, Neighbourhood walk and NEWater Visitor Centre, SS helps pupils to attain relevant knowledge and understanding about Singapore’s own identity and characteristics, develop critical and reflective thinking skills, as well as appreciate and celebrate Singapore’s strengths.
SS also seeks to inculcate in pupils a deeper understanding of the values that define the Singaporean society and nurture dispositions to show concern for the world they live in. The curriculum is designed to develop pupils in becoming informed, concerned and participative citizens with a global outlook.
